Empowering Future Engineers Through AI Chatbots

AI is shaping the future for everyone, and its impact is starting at younger ages. Hosted by the Society of Women Engineers, the "WOW! That’s Engineering!” workshop brought together bright and curious 4th–6th grade girls for a hands-on introduction to AI chatbots. Leading the workshop was a Zammo.ai Senior Technical Specialist, who is involved in their organization, guiding the students through interactive exercises that demonstrated how AI powers virtual assistants, educational tools, and creative applications. Through these activities, the girls gained insight into how AI chatbots work, how they can be customized, and how AI plays a role in their everyday lives.
Understanding AI and Its Role
To set the stage, students first explored the fundamentals of AI:
What is AI? AI refers to computer systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding language, making recommendations, and recognizing patterns.
How is AI Used? AI is everywhere—from Siri and Alexa to Netflix recommendations and customer service chatbots.
What is a Chatbot? A chatbot is a computer program that simulates human conversation, responding to text inputs in a helpful and interactive way.
The girls shared their own experiences with AI, realizing just how often they interact with it in their daily lives. The excitement in the room grew as they saw AI not just as something distant and complex but as a tool they could understand and even create themselves.

The room filled with laughter as they saw how AI could transform its responses based on their prompts. They even took their creativity a step further by using AI to generate poetry, crafting haikus, limericks, and sonnets.
Example prompt: "Write a haiku about exchanging lunches with a best friend."
This exercise demonstrated that AI is more than a tool for answering questions—it’s a creative companion that can bring ideas to life.
